  • Weekend Exterior Checklist for Philadelphia Homeowners

The weekend is a great time to walk around your home and check for exterior issues before they become expensive repairs. In Philadelphia neighborhoods like South Philly, Center City, Fishtown, Kensington, and Port Richmond, rowhomes face constant weather exposure, tight spacing, older materials, and drainage challenges. A quick exterior checklist can help homeowners catch problems early.

Start with the siding. Look for loose panels, cracks, warping, gaps, missing pieces, or areas where siding has pulled away from the wall. Pay close attention around windows, doors, upper floors, porch ceilings, and rear additions. Damaged siding can allow water behind the exterior surface.

Next, check the gutters. Look for sagging, overflow marks, loose downspouts, clogs, or water staining on the wall below. Gutters should move water away from the home, not down the side of the building. Poor drainage can damage siding, masonry, trim, and foundation areas.

Then inspect trim and exterior woodwork. Window trim, fascia, soffits, porch ceilings, and entry details should be solid and sealed. Soft wood, peeling paint, gaps, or rot can allow moisture to enter the structure.

Look at brick and masonry areas. Missing mortar, cracks, loose bricks, white staining, or damp interior walls may point to masonry repair needs. Brick pointing can help protect older walls from water intrusion.

Also check sealant lines around windows, doors, and transitions between materials. Failed caulk or open seams are common moisture entry points.
